How often should I empty my septic tank?
Ideally, you should empty your septic tank every year, depending on usage. You will know you have a problem if you notice gurgling drains, drains slow to empty and drains backing up, etc. If you allow the septic tank to fill with sludge then it can cause blockages and may lead to your system failing.
Should a Contractor have a permit to empty my septic tank?
Yes. If someone calls to your door asking to empty your septic tank then you should immediately ask for a copy of their permit. If they do not have a permit, then they cannot empty your tank. Countywide Drain Services Ltd. has permits for this service from all Local Authorities Including:
Cork Co. Council,
Cork City Council,
Kerry Co. Council,
Etc.
What is a Grease Trap? Should I have one installed?
Grease traps are usually installed on the drainage pipes from the kitchen in restaurants, bars, fast food outlets, hotels, etc. Their function is to prevent the grease from entering the main sewer system. Ideally, grease traps should be emptied on an annual basis at least. In some cases grease traps are installed in private residents with septic tanks, again with the purpose of preventing the grease from entering the septic tank.
What is a Waste Collection Permit?
Each Licensed Waste Operator is required to apply to the appropriate County/City Council for a Waste Collection Permit in order for them to collect and dispose of waste in the relevant Local Authority Area.
